As the season approaches we would like to welcome all of the athletes and
parents back to a new and exciting year. Over the summer some staff changes
have occurred and we would like to introduce you to them and say goodbye and
thank you to those who are no longer coaching for us.
Dana Hooper will be moving into a new and exciting phase of coaching - and
perhaps the most rewarding and challenging one - becoming a Dad. Dana and
Deep's baby boy is due in a month. We can't wait to see him on the
sidelines at races wearing orange and green. Dana coached the Varsity men
to a National Championship gold medal, an accomplishment that the boys and
the team will not soon forget. Dana moved this team forward and made it a
nationally ranked program. We want to thank Dana for the time he spent
working for countless high school kids in all his years with the strokes.
Dana has spent over 12 years with our organization both as a rower and as a
coach. Dana will continue to work with the Strokes as the structural
engineer for our new boathouse.
The Varsity Men's Position will be filled by Daniel Donoho. Dan is a recent
graduate of Dartmouth College where he rowed in the varsity 8+ and won the
award for outstanding senior leadership. He very motivated and serious
athlete and will be a great mentor for our rowers. Varsity men - please be
sure to read the letter from Dan to you all!
Derek Byrnes has decided to leave the program this year. Derek developed
and led our women's team to uncountable victories and made Oakland Strokes
women a dominating force, nationally and internationally. Besides the
success on the race course he has instilled a spirit and a set values among
the women of the Oakland Strokes that will influence them for a lifetime.
The program and our athletes will remember Derek fondly for years to come.
He has enriched our program and we are grateful to him and the support he
received from his wife Michelle. We will all miss him and will wish him well
in his future endeavors.
The Women's Varsity coach will be filled by Ian Simpson. Ian has most
recently coached and ran the program at Long Beach Juniors. In addition to
various coaching positions Ian has coached for the United States National
Teams. He is a very accomplished coach and leader who will be able to build
upon the successes of our program.
We are busy assigning the other positions and as soon as we have a
completed picture we will let you know,
All of the coaches look forward to starting practice on the September 9th.
Dan would like to have a meet and greet session at the boathouse on
September 3rd , at 1pm. A meeting with Ian will be scheduled on Friday
before the first practice with the team captains.
The letter from Dan Donoho:
To all Oakland Strokes Varsity Men's Athletes,
My name is Dan Donoho and I have been appointed as the new Head Coach of the
Oakland Strokes Men's program. I am very excited about the team and what we
can accomplish this season, and in seasons to come. My overall goal for the
Oakland Strokes program is to be a force in the eight race at the US Rowing
National Youth Championships. I believe that we can continue to be a
dominate force in junior rowing. It will require focus, maximum effort, and
real teamwork, the challenges we will face is what will make this goal so
much fun to accomplish.
Our first official practice will begin at 7:00 AM on Saturday, September 9.
We will begin practice with a warm up. We will then row on the ergs for 3 x
15' and go out for a brief row on the water afterwards.
You will have to begin getting fit immediately. You must use whatever
facilities you have available to you. Whether you are at home, at Grandma's,
or in Tahiti:. Now is the time to shake the cobwebs off. If we want to be a
program whose goal is to be a national force in rowing, We need to be doing
the following for the next two weeks.
* Three times per week: Bike or erg for at least 40 minutes, but for
no more than two hours at "conversational pace." You should be able to hold
a conversation with some difficulty.
* Once per week: Run bike or erg for either 2 x 30' (8k), 3 x 20'
(5k), or 4 x 15' (4k), and rest for 7', 5' or 4' respectively between
pieces. Erg/run/bike at the fastest pace you can sustain for all of the
pieces.
* Once per week: Erg a single time trial piece of distance 8k, 10k, or
15k (that's 30', 40' or 60' if you're on the bike or running).
* Twice per week: Rest.
Note: if you are injured in any way, your priority is to get better by the
beginning of fall practice, and you should train to the extent that is
possible given your situation.
If you or your parents would like to meet me before the start of official
practice, I will be at the boathouse from noon to 1 PM on Sunday, September
3. I am also reachable by cell phone at 510-682-4994, and via email (
<mailto:ddonoho@gmail.com> ddonoho@gmail.com). Athletes, please do not
hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
Best,
