Ergathon Fundraiser
Update
Thanks to all of you who
helped make the Ergathon a success! Our rowers had a great time and we
are continuing to raise money for much needed new equipment. =20
A big THANK YOU
everyone who has contributed so far. If you have not yet had a chance to
make your contribution, there is still time. The suggested donation per
rowing family is $400. Rowers who generate $1,000 in contributions from
family and friends will receive a credit for $100 in Strokes merchandise.=20
Rowers who raise $1,200 will get a $400 rebate on spring registration fees;

Thoughts from Women's Varsity Coach Ian Simpson about Preventing and Addres=
sing
Over-Use Injuries
The nature of the sport of rowing is that it is a repetitive motion. The te=
am
is very ambitious and it worked extremely hard during the fall; rowing, erg=
ing
and running many, many miles. The repetition leads to improvement in skills=
and
conditioning, which is needed to achieve competitive success, but it also l=
eads
to a risk of repetitive-stress injuries. A number of rowers have experience=
d
some form of over-use injuries this season. The coaching staff is acutely a=
ware
of the issue and is constantly taking steps to address and prevent overuse =
injuries.
So what do we do to mitigate these injuries?
Rest. As soon as any rower exhibits
signs of injury, we urge first rest, followed immediately by the rower seek=
ing
professional physical therapy. We have identified SOL Physical Therapy as a
good resource to diagnose and treat the kind of injuries we tend to get in =
this
sport. The feedback from athletes and families has been positive and the
results we see are very encouraging.
Stretching. We are talking with SOLPT
about teaching the rowers techniques to ease the tightness we observe in ha=
mstrings
and psoas muscles that is contributing to some of the injuries. We are also
talking about having one of their therapists come to some of the early spri=
ng
practices and make further recommendations about keeping the athletes injur=
y-free.
Strengthening. We are also reviewing
our core strengthening protocols to ensure we are properly strengthening th=
eir
bodies to allow them to undertake the rowing work-load safely. We will be
adding more Pilates-type training into the program.
We have recently hired an additional coach, Marjorie Boor,
in part to work with those athletes whose bodies are still developing and f=
or
whom the type of training that is reasonable for a mature young woman may n=
ot
be appropriate for a yet physically immature younger teenager. Marjorie is =
a health-care professional and is already
doing a good job working with all the athletes as they get aches and pains.=
She
is experienced in Pilates, is developing our core-strengthening
program and is our primary liaison with SOLPT.
The novice team this year is training harder than they did last year, which
should help when they move to varsity next year=97when there should be less=
of a
jump in the intensity of training than this year.
The fall training period is most important in terms of building strength an=
d
conditioning and teaching skills. We have completed the bulk of the large
volume work-outs and as we now prepare for the racing season the nature of =
the
work-outs changes. There is more opportunity for the rowers to rest and rec=
over
during and between practices. The work that they've done already will make =
the
girls stronger as we go into the spring, and hopefully keep them healthier =
as a
result.
Finally, we need to get the rowers and their families (especially the novic=
es)
to understand that they MUST stay in shape over the summer break so they ar=
e
better prepared for varsity-level training beginning in September.
The Oakland Strokes is a demanding and competitive youth rowing program. Wh=
ile
we train hard, we of course strive to maintain the health and welfare of th=
e
athletes and to keep it both challenging and fun. Parents with concerns abo=
ut
over-use injuries should feel free to contact any of the coaches or coach
liaisons for consultation.
