Call for Chaperones!
Does being near the water on a fun weekend getaway appeal to you? I thought
so! Oh, something else, do you like being around kids? I thought so, too!
You can do both by chaperoning an Oakland Strokes away regatta this spring!
This is one of the best jobs because you'll become great friends with so
many other wonderful OS parents and 160 kids!
Here are the details:
San Diego Crew Classic - April 2 - 5 (Thursday - Sunday) Select Varsity only
Big regatta with lots of top college teams, juniors and master racing.
Gorgeous venue with a jumbo-tron! Last year, to the absolute delight of
kids and adults alike, the camera filmed a collegiate rower catching air as
he caught an ejecto crab!
This is for the Men's and Women's Varsity team only. You will need to fly
down with the team on Thursday evening, April 2nd. Once you get to the
airport, you will pick up your convertible sport car, I mean 15 passenger
van, from the rental agency. You will be responsible for your boat of 9
kids all weekend - bringing them breakfast in the morning, possibly
supplementing their lunch, taking them to dinner - driving them back and
forth to the hotel. It is a lot of work - but, probably the best regatta
you'll ever attend. Henley might be better... Ian and Ivan will announce
the boats two weeks before we go. We usually fly back around 3 or 4 in the
afternoon on Sunday.
Men's Lightweight boat - 1 parent or couple
Men's Varsity boat- 1 parent.
Men's J. Varsity boat- 1 parent..
Women's LightWeight boat- 1 parent.
Women's Varsity boat - 1 parent.
Women's J. Varsity boat- 1 parent.
Long Beach Regatta - April 16 - 19 (Thursday - Sunday)
The whole team ( MV, MN, WV,WN) goes down on Thursday late afternoon, April
16th. Another great venue, you won't believe how close the spectators are
to the racing. Very relaxing and enjoyable. We have four buses going there
and we will need at least one parent on each bus. Others are welcome to fly
down there and back without your kid. All kids ride the bus there and back.
We will give priority for bus riders until we have enough for that. Susan
Ito secured the uber nice Fairmont Hotel for us at an unbelievable rate!
We are looking for a total of 16 parents each responsible for one boat of 9
kids. The kids looked like Mr. T last year with all of their medals around
their necks!
Men's Varsity - 4 parents
Men's Novice - 2 parents
Women's Varsity - 5 parents
Women's Novice - 5 parents
CJ's - Southwest Regional Championships, Lake Natoma - near Sacramento May
7 - 10 (Thurs-Sunday)
The culmination of a whole year's hard work. The whole team ( MV, MN, WV,WN)
goes down on Thursday late afternoon, May 7th. Another great racing venue.
We have four buses going there and we will need at least one parent on each
bus. We will need several parents to go Thursday night so that they can
help with Friday's breakfast and just be there during the night - some kids
have gotten a little frisky in past years. Very exciting racing, the kids
are at peak performance mode because the top 3 varsity boats in each event
qualify for nationals. They go all out. The best thing is how the whole
team supports every boat racing- boy or girl. It is a loud, orange crowd!
We are looking for a total of 16 parents each responsible for one boat of 9
kids.

So, thank you for considering this. We know you will find it very
rewarding. Please let me know which regattas you would be interested in and
whether you will be taking the bus or flying on your own. Also, it is okay
to chaperone another boat besides your athlete's. So, let me know that in
your reply. We will have a chaperone meeting before each regatta so that
you know exactly what your responsibilities are. We may need you to make
the Costco run, bagel run, restaurant scouting run, drive coaches around,
check in, make sandwiches, pack up the van, etc. If you can't chaperone but
would like to watch the races, Susan Ito usually books some extra rooms for
spectator parents at excellent rates. More info later!
If you signed up for chaperoning at the fall parent meeting - please let me
know. I am still looking for that list!
