Dear Strokes Athletes and Parents,

First, we would like to congratulate Ian Simpson (and Kelly Bauer and Barba=
ra Barnes) for the great success of the National Championship Oakland Strok=
es Women's Pair.=C2=A0 We would also like to thank Ian for his three years =
of service to the Oakland Strokes. =C2=A0His dedication to the rowers and t=
he organization have been exemplary.=C2=A0 He put a tremendous amount of ef=
fort and thought into his work with the Woman's Varsity crews and the Strok=
es as an organization.=C2=A0 We wish Ian all the best as he pursues new opp=
ortunities back in Southern California.

Second, we are very pleased to let you know that we have assembled a great =
group of coaches for next season. =C2=A0You=E2=80=99ll see that we have als=
o restructured some positions and added others to create an environment for=
 our coaches (as well as athletes) that is more focused on learning/coach d=
evelopment and cross pollinating our successes among our crews.=C2=A0 We ar=
e very excited about this improvement to the Strokes coaching structure.

Listed below are the coaches as we know them today.=C2=A0 We are still work=
ing on filling an assistant position or two, but the big pieces of the puzz=
le are in place.=C2=A0 They are:

Women=E2=80=99s Novice Coach:=C2=A0 Beth Anderson=C2=A0 (returning)
Women=E2=80=99s Novice Assistant Coach:=C2=A0 Hannah Gallup=C2=A0 (returnin=
g)
Women=E2=80=99s Novice Assistant Coach: =C2=A0TBA

Women=E2=80=99s Varsity Coach: =C2=A0Derek Byrnes=C2=A0 (Formerly Los Altos=
 WV coach as well as Oakland Strokes WV coach)
Women=E2=80=99s Assistant Coach: =C2=A0Teresa Oja=C2=A0 (returning)
Women=E2=80=99s Assistant Coach:=C2=A0 Cassandra Cunningham (Formerly Head =
Coach at Serra High School Crew)

Men=E2=80=99s Novice Coach: =C2=A0Jason Hilton=C2=A0 (returning)
Men=E2=80=99s Novice Assistant Coach: =C2=A0David Adams=C2=A0 (returning)

Men=E2=80=99s Varsity Coach: =C2=A0Ivan Smiljanic=C2=A0 (returning)
Men=E2=80=99s Assistant Coach: =C2=A0Rich Wendling=C2=A0 (Formerly Head Coa=
ch of Cal Women's Lightweight Crew and Oakland Strokes Board Member)

In addition to the changes in personnel listed, we have added/clarified fou=
r key roles to be sure our coaches work well together and continue to focus=
 on building their coaching skills/competencies.=C2=A0 To this end, we have=
 created:

A Head Coach position to whom all of the lead coaches will report.=C2=A0 De=
rek Byrnes will serve in this role.=C2=A0 Derek has one of the strongest re=
cords of junior rowing coaching success in the entire country and all or ou=
r coaches are thrilled to have him as a resource and guide as they work to =
improve their coaching skills and success.

A Director of Rowing position which will oversee all aspects of Rowing Oper=
ations outside of the coaching area, including boathouse and equipment mana=
gement, regatta operations planning, etc.=C2=A0 Beth Anderson will serve in=
 this role.

An Outreach Coordinator position to ensure and coordinate our outreach effo=
rts to the greater Oakland community.=C2=A0 Our outreach effort will attrac=
t and support rowers from the City of Oakland as required and enthusiastica=
lly embraced by the Strokes as part of our new boathouse agreement with the=
 East Bay Regional Park District .=C2=A0 Rich Wendling will serve in this r=
ole.

An Assistant Rigger position to help keep our shells and launches in good w=
orking condition and properly adjusted for practices and races.=C2=A0 David=
 Adams will serve in this role.

We also have an exciting addition to our Coaches' Liaison Committee in Dr. =
Rebecca Demorest. =C2=A0Becky comes to us from a high school rowing career =
in Philadelphia followed by four years at the University of Pennsylvania. =
=C2=A0She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and wo=
rked in New York City, specializing in pediatric physiology.=C2=A0 Becky ha=
s also served as the US National Team Doctor for the Under 23 team at the W=
orld Championships.=C2=A0 She and her husband, Joe, live in Walnut Creek; s=
he practices at Children=E2=80=99s Hospital in Oakland and Walnut Creek.=C2=
=A0 With this change the Coaches=E2=80=99 Liaison Committee next year will =
consist of Jim Farrell, Dan Herbert, Rebecca Demorest and Barnaby Beck.

Another piece of great news is that yesterday the East Bay Regional Park Di=
strict Board approved the contract to begin work on our new boathouse.=C2=
=A0 Work will begin in early August with a scheduled occupancy in the fall =
of 2010.=C2=A0 This puts the Strokes on an entire new and secure path for t=
he future.=C2=A0=20

We are very excited about this coming year and feel that we=E2=80=99ve asse=
mbled the best junior rowing coaching staff in the country.

Go Strokes!
